Not sure. Maybe because people don't really understand how someone could ever want to do that to themselves unless they have experienced it, dealt with someone like that or is trained in treating it. There are also a small percentage of people that do that for attention usually people who are manipulative. It should always be taken seriously. It is a very real thing that can be scary for both the people dealing with it and the person experiencing it.
