Not everyone... but who doesn't want to feel good about the way they look?
I think they assume that those considered "beautiful" receive better treatment and in result, live better lives due to their looks.

TLDR;Whether we like it or not, and whether it’s less a case of cause and effect than correlation, in Western culture, which is highly influenced by media and advertising, research shows that “beauty” matters. it pervades society and how we choose our leaders, our loved ones, and our friends, bosses and co-workers.
