She is turning 40 and that can be traumatic to us. So avoid getting her anything that reminds she IS that age. Avoid the age topic all together. So no expensive makeup that may suggest she has wrinkles to hide!
I'm long past 40, by over 20 years but I would have liked a dozen roses, Half red and half pink. Perhaps a bouquet with baby's breathe and 3 carnations (white) to offset it. A negligee would have also been nice. NOT a gift certificate- that is too impersonal for b-days. May be a big candle (or many small ones) at Yankee Candle is she likes scents.
Focus on making her feel young- as she still is. But her mind may be telling her something else. Distract it.

@GoodnitesQC Jewelry is great. But do not get a stone that symbolizes 40 in any way. be it anniversary or age. Look online for stones like that. And if you go that route get a necklace and Earring set. She will be at the age where she starts to give away a lot of her older and cheaper jewelry.
