Oddly enough, they can create a sense of community.
Instead of just being weird or different, you have a word to put to it, and you can find others like you. You get the opportunity to understand it better, and be understood.

As far as lgbtq* stuff goes "queer" is a nice cover-all. It can mean whatever you want it to.
