I've been told some answers, but I don't think they're complete.
Here goes.
We were created for fellowship. The only good way for us to exist is with God. Only you can't have real fellowship with people of they have no choice. God gave us choice.
So there was an option to leave God, that is to sin. The forbidden fruit. When man walked away from God, we were damaged, because we were no longer connected to the One giving life.
It's a bit of a theoretical answer, but I hope it helps a little. :)
