Wouldn’t it need 2 g’s to be pronounced with a short a?😅

If a word contains only one vowel, and that vowel appears in the middle of the word, the vowel is usually pronounced as a short vowel. This is especially true if the word is very short. Examples:
at
bat
mat
bet
wet
If there are two vowels in a word, but the first vowel is followed by two of the same consonants (a double consonant), the vowel’s sound is short.
baggage
bagged
baggy
matter
cannon
ribbon
wobble
When a single vowel is at the end of a word or syllable, it usually makes the long vowel sound, as in “paper”.
What am I the spelling, grammar, and pronunciation teacher here??
