My co-worker says California has 5 syllables, I say it has 4.

At least the way I have been taught to divide words when pronouncing them correctly. I cannot say if you do it differently in the US.

@SapphicHeart I'm in Canada... I just thought it's "said" with 4 syllables but maybe spelled with 5. 🤔

Oops. Sorry. I was going by how it's spelled. It's how we do it here. Hmm.
