Why can't humans lay eggs instead?

Instead of having periods or live birth.

Laying eggs every month without being fertilized becoming a period egg.

That would be preferable in a lot of ways. But I think that humans are too big (when full grown) and complicated to be able to develop in an egg that is small enough for human women to lay.
