Death penalty or prison for life?

For criminals like Charles Manson?

Manson originally received the death penalty for his part in the Tate-Labianca murders, as did the others. California briefly repealed the death penalty, and the sentences were commuted to life. In my opinion, a life sentence should mean for life. Parole shouldn’t even be a possibility or duh, it’s not a life sentence. So someone who was on death row at one point should never be walking the streets, unless they were totally exonerated.
