When I was 19 I signed up for a Habitat for Humanity trip to Costa Rica to build 7 homes in a jungle community. When I arrived I was shocked to find Jimmy Carter and his wife Roselyn on the 18 member work crew! We spent 3 weeks on this project and were fed and housed by the local community, who were generous and wonderful, but had only simple resources to offer. The Carters accepted the same accommodations. They worked as hard as everyone else, they were gracious and funny and down to earth, they got dusty and sweaty, they bled. I had heard they were active on the board of this organization, but I had no idea they volunteered their time at the civilian level. It was all about the project to them, and beyond his notable listening skills and ability to communicate well with anyone, you would never have known he was a former President. His private life was committed to service, it was clearly what he loved to do...but very, very quietly. I still admire that kind of grace. They were very cool.

A far cry from the monkey who runs our circus today.

@Splendida Wow., thats a really cool story. Yep ., on that one would have to agree
Yes, while in college I met Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Stevie Wonder, Julian Bond, Andrew Young. Through friends and family I met Willie Brown, Gavin Newsom, Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, as well as Angela Davis and Maya Angelou.
@SW-User I also met the late Huey Newton, twice. First time I was 13 at a Panther Food drive helping to pass out food, and he called me “Baby X” and thanked me. The second time was when I was 22 and a friend and I ran into him at Ivey’s in Oakland. He invited us to join him for a drink, and we did.

@bijouxbroussard Wow! Great list! Those are notable greats!
Shook hands with Jim Croce after the college concert, before he got on the plane that crashed and killed him.

All of the group Sha-Na-Na in a pot smoked filled Holiday Inn after their concert till 7am.

Cluelessly sat down at a NYC Deli Counter next to and bullshitted with actor Roy Scheider over coffee and sandwiches for 45 mins.

YES, I use to live in CA and went to Hollywood where Alan Hale of Gilligan's Island had a restaurant. He would stand at the door in his skipper's outfit and shake everyone's hand that came in. I also worked at the first "fitness spa" which was Jack LaLanne's and met him too. ⭐Oh, we also knew where "The Carpenters" lived and would park outside their house to see them at night when we were teenagers, but never did.😉🎶

I was working at the hotel Clint Eastwood stayed at while filming Unforgiven.
We had occasion to exchange words at different times during his stay, but there was no official introduction.
