something about tearing the sleeves off a jacket?

So I'm sitting here comfortable watching a movie (pirates of the caribbean, dead men tell no tales. mild spoiler alert!) where in the beginning this guy makes a ruckus on deck and gets accused of treason. while saying so the guy ripped his sleeves from his jacket aaand here's my question: why did he have to wreck his jacket? I believe it to be some sort of etiquette? but I am not sure of it neither can I find it on the internet. maybe anyone of you might know more (please provide link for proof if possible) thank you!
