I'm able to get a free phone upgrade soon - do you recommend I get an iPhone or Android?

Get what you can afford. Besides making calls and texting what other features do you want?

@TimSummers that's sort of the crux of the issue. I refuse to pay any $$... I currently have an iPhone 5S which does everything I need it to so don't really feel a "need" for anything better (though iOS 11 is causing some issues).

The only reason I'm even considering a new one is because my contract is up and I could get a free (older model) phone

@Salix75 FREE is always good. If you are comfortable with your current iPhone I see no reason not to get another one. I have an Android and love it but that is a personal preference. Good luck in your choice.
