When you were growing up, how did you feel about other people shortening your name?

Since my name in real life is David, a lot of people simply refer to me as Dave in person and I never really liked it to be honest.

I have always been David to my immediate family, so other people (relatives, new people I'd meet, etc.) calling me Dave always felt weird and awkward to me. Not that I ever said anything about it back then, but it still feels that way to this day.

For some reason, some people could never pronounce my name correctly and I eventually got so fed up that I started telling people, "You can call me Ai though!" to save myself the trouble. It was a blessing.
