Can you really get in trouble for posting or stealing pictures of other people?

I've heard that you can. But I've suspected that many do it anyway. Does the specific person you stole the picture from have to know that you posted it? Or?

The photographer owns the copyright to their work and can choose how it is used. If you use someone's work and make money from it, you can be sued. Otherwise, mostly they can just issue a DMCA takedown request.

Yes, privacy rights and copyright issues are complicated with private photos. But I doubt Lena Horne's heirs will sue me for using one of her album covers as my avatar. 🙂
