I once visited a tiny village where the streets were almost empty, the houses looked decades old, and there was barely any phone signal. It felt strange because life seemed to move at a completely different pace there

An old two-story brick school house that we discovered just north of the small village where I lived when I was 8 years old. The school must have been built in the late 1800’s. It had been closed right after WWII ended. People who had lived in the village found good jobs in the cities and moved out so not enough students to keep it open. It had been purchased by a farmer who stored bales of hay on the first floor during the winter. We walked inside and saw the old desk with a bench seat attached to the back of each one. There were probably at least 40 of those desks stored in the building. Then we walked upstairs. There was a huge black board along the front wall. On the last day of school the students wrote their names in colored chalk and they added the date the school closed. What was bad was that floor was sagging so it was dangerous for us to be walking around upstairs. We were young enough not to know better though. We told our friend’s mother and she scolded us and told us that the floor could have collapsed and to not go back there. I wish we had a way to take photos of that. Those desks would have been worth a lot these days being antiques.

My mother was a church secretary in an old downtown church. When I was about 10 years old, I sometimes went there after school for some reason and was free to explore the big old building. I roamed everywhere, and on the top floor, I found a door that looked like it hadn't been opened in ages. So I opened it. There was a treasure trove of old stuff. Most interesting were things brought back by missionaries to Africa. The church had no place to display them, so they were shoved out of the way. Native shields and spears. Idols to worship. Best of all, a big python skin!!!

Many many years ago. In the 80s you could get into this.
It's an old observer corps bunker from the cold war. They were permanently manned from the 50s to the 70s in case there was a nuclear war these were to monitor the attack and fallout and report back to the government etc.
Now it's all sealed up no way to get in.

@OldBrit That's terrifying!
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Nataliya it was the cold War. It's about 20mins walk from my house. As a kid we used to walk and cycle there. You'd see the soldiers occasionally. As teenagers we managed to get in after they abandoned it.

@OldBrit Some of these have found new owners and uses, if only as stores.

Seems to be merely an ordinary fairgound Hall of Mirrors, in poor condition.

The one place I'd love to have been able to explore hosted my school for a year oro so until a brand-new one was opened. I don't know what it had been built as, possibly a house but rather randomly extended since. It held a wonderful collection of intriguing corridors and staircases, changes of level and so on.

"Weird"? No. Fascinating, yes.

If you want to explore weird places look for a channel on YouTube called The Proper People. They do a fantastic job.
