I am curious... When you hear "South Africa" what goes through your mind?

What do you picture it to be like? 🤔

*slaps your hand away from your keyboard* No don't ask Google.

@Picklebobble2: Zola Budd?! 😱... Is jy n Afrikaner?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@iMystery: Early 80's i think.
South Africa was banned from all forms of international sports competition. In response to the Apartheid thing.
Budd was a young gifted runner from South Africa looking to compete at the top level.
She eventually wound up running for Great Britain i think. Looking to make the Olympic team for either the '80 or '84 games.
Caused a huge media stir when she took out the American Mary Decker-Slayney in the Olympic finals.

@Picklebobble2: WORD!!!!!! You know the history man!
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@iMystery: it's one area of history i've grown up with.
I've met many from South Africa of all colours and they're all wonderfully mad !
Almost braai weather eh ??

@Picklebobble2: 🍺 you said the word BRAAI!!!!! 😱.. I am impressed! 😂
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@iMystery: yeah man !🍻
iMystery · M
@Picklebobble2: Lol your MAD South African friends have taught you well 😂
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@iMystery: I used to share a house with a white South African guy; a coloured guy from Zimbabwe and a woman from Kenya !!!
It was MAD !!
They'd fight over anything !
Politics on the news; sport in the papers; everything !!
BUT. The cooking and the trips out to places that we used to take together, certainly taught me a lot !!

@Picklebobble2: Hahahaha man that is a major cultural difference right there! South African, Zimbabwean and Kenyan? All 3 from totally different African worlds? 😂
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@iMystery: Tell me about it !! and if there was cricket on the tv.....i'd leave the room !!
I don't think i'd ever heard a woman use quite so many different swear words !!!
iMystery · M
@Picklebobble2: 😂 Wise man you are to leave the room lol... Cricket can become an emotional topic lol.

Luckily I am not much of a cricket guy.. but RUGBY on the other hand!

Especially when Springboks play against Wales, England, Australia and New Zealand!... man that is when the fire works comes out! 🤣

@Picklebobble2: You forgot one thing. The world's very first heart transplant was done here by a S.African doctor. :-)
iMystery · M
@Wraithorn: Yeah Doctor Chris Bernard! My uncle knew him personally! So did my mom!
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@iMystery: Really ? That's great. Small world isn't it.
iMystery · M
@Wraithorn: Absolutely is! Both my mom and uncle worked at Groote Schuur Hospital where Dr Bernard was based AND did that first operation!
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@iMystery: Awesome. Your relatives were a part of one of our proud moments in history. Respect to them. Their energy is a part of that event in history. I imagine you are quite proud of that. You should be. Respect.
iMystery · M
@Wraithorn: I definitely am. But I do not let my pride cloud my judgement. Today we have many who have not witnessed nor experienced a damn thing believing they are "entitled" to everything. I believe fully in achieving things based on MERIT and not the colour of my skin.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@iMystery: Well said. That is the kind of thinking that could save our country from slipping further downhill. We just people to comprehend and respect that. Enough is enough. The past taught us many things so now it's time to apply all that knowledge and work together and share.
iMystery · M
@Wraithorn: Totally agreed. Enough said lol.
