Why do Americans assume Mexico is a poor country?

It easily has over 130 million people living at Mexico. Mexico is far from a poor country. Basically many in Mexico own a iPhone. 🇲🇽

Ok I understand what you're trying to say but a big population and an iPhone does not equate to being rich/well-off.
