True airport story.

Family of 4 at boarding.
2 parents, boy and girl preteen.
Nicely dressed, well behaved.

Gate agent has issues with them,
1. Boarding zones 1-4, they have zone 6 and dad is trying to bullshit onto the plane, quietly and politely.
2. Another agent at the gate comes up to help get them out of the way they start to move and I see problem two. They have 9 bags, n i n e bags. Rolling. At least 5 of them are greater than 22” tall. One of the bags is an RTC 45 cooler on wheels.

Somehow, I didn’t even notice the baggage until they started moving out of the way.

As I moved past the scanner I heard the employee say, “YES, I am charging for the luggage if you want to board the plane.”

I thought maybe a ruckus started because the aircraft aisle cleared.

Then the family came in finally, sans big bags, carryons only.

Mom and dad had sad faces. Scam rejected.

I wanted to ask what was in the cooler but they didn’t come back far enough. I asked the flight attendant, she was confused. I told her about all the luggage. And the cooler. She said she’d ask if the gate agent said anything.

Nope, they didn’t know. When United sends me a survey I’m going give the gate agent a shout out (I wrote their last name down and gate number) and ask them to ask the gate agent what was in the cooler.

They might not have been carrying anything illegal or banned under airline regulations in the luggage, but certainly seemed intent on breaking the luggage rules!

Whether by sheer ignorance or deliberately, only they can say, but there are plenty about who seem to assume regulations apply to everyone except themselves.
