Why Europeans Should Consider Alternative Leisure Destinations Over the US

With recent events and future leadership changes in the United States sparking significant controversy, many Europeans are reconsidering the US as a leisure destination. For those prioritising values of inclusivity, respect and safety (not getting shot!) in travel choices, several alternative destinations offer incredible experiences without the complexities or moral dilemmas that now accompany travel to the US. Below are five standout destinations, each providing diverse and rewarding experiences.

1. Portugal: A Coastal and Cultural Treasure

Portugal’s warm climate, rich culture, and affordability make it an excellent choice. The country offers everything from Lisbon’s vibrant arts scene to the serene beauty of the Douro Valley and the Algarve’s stunning coastlines. Portugal’s welcoming reputation, low crime rates, and famed cuisine—from seafood to renowned pastries—make it an inviting, worry-free destination.

2. Japan: Tradition Meets Modernity

Japan combines a sense of deep tradition with modern, efficient cities like Tokyo and historic treasures in Kyoto. The country’s hospitality is exceptional, and its efficient public transport makes exploration simple. Japan also provides varied experiences, from the tranquillity of its temples and tea ceremonies to the thrill of high-tech city life. For a truly unique cultural immersion, Japan delivers safety and a warm welcome for travellers.

3. New Zealand: Nature’s Playground

New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes, including beaches, mountains, and rainforests, cater to outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking peaceful, untouched beauty. Known for its adventurous spirit, New Zealand offers hiking, skiing, and water sports in some of the world’s most stunning settings. With a focus on environmental preservation and indigenous Maori culture, New Zealand provides a unique travel experience far removed from more politically fraught regions.

4. Iceland: Land of Fire and Ice

Iceland is a paradise for those interested in untouched, raw landscapes shaped by volcanic activity and glaciers. Whether exploring Reykjavik’s creative scene or visiting natural wonders like the Golden Circle, Iceland offers an inspiring escape. The Northern Lights and midnight sun are seasonal highlights, and the country’s low crime rates ensure a secure and peaceful visit.

5. Greece: History, Sun, and Sea

For a rich historical experience within Europe, Greece is an ideal choice. Ancient ruins, beautiful islands like Santorini, and vibrant cities provide endless opportunities for exploration. With friendly locals, delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and direct access from major European cities, Greece is a convenient option for spontaneous or short-term trips that combine relaxation and cultural depth.

It never occurred to me that the USA was ever a primary vacation option for anyone here in Europe! Why would anyone even bother?

@SandWitch
Where else would you find a skyscraper. Europe has larger buildings but they don’t have the length that satisfies the adventurous traveler!

@Pfuzylogic Shenzhen and Hong Kong both have more skyscrapers than New York 🙂🐼🥢

Why would anyone go on vacation to look at concrete skyscrapers in the USA? Wouldn't a picture in a magazine do just as well?

@Anniedlr

Shenzhen and Hong Kong both have more skyscrapers than New York

Very true! And Hong Kong alone as more modern architecture than what's found in all of the USA combined from coast to coast!

Again, why would anyone go on vacation to the USA to watch sub-standard American culture play out?
Pfuzylogic · M
@SandWitch I take it that you have never been to the top of one.This is back in the 80s but the they had glass bottom areas at the Sears tower where you could embrace the feel of the height!
Pfuzylogic · M
@Anniedlr There is more than New York with skyscrapers. Things have changed post President Carter. 😇

I travel the world for a living, the USA being one such destination and I've been on the top floor of many skyscrapers in the USA which is either a penthouse condo, an Executive's office or it's a restaurant.

It's really not a big deal to be up there and the height above ground is mute point if you're so high up that what's on the ground becomes irrelevant without binoculars

Additionally, one cannot see very far on the average day because the industrial air pollution in America is so bad most of the time from the burning of fossil fuel and industrial waste being released into the atmosphere indiscriminately, that the visibility of often reduced to just 3 miles at best.
Pfuzylogic · M
@SandWitch You are speaking worst case scenarios lol
China is the only country with more skyscrapers.
My point is that Europe have very few if any. I did go to the top of the Eiffel Tower back in 2001 and you could see the city but it was nothing compared to the Sears Tower. I don’t think Sweden has any.

@Pfuzylogic
Do you have a fetish for skyscrapers or something? Why do you view skyscrapers as a phallic symbol representing national status?
Pfuzylogic · M
@SandWitch
A phallic symbol…
Sorry but to quote Robert Palmer…
🎼I didn’t mean to turn you on!🎼
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@Pfuzylogic
Well actually, you didn't. But your logic is also the reason why the USA is not a desirable destination for Europeans because America is a turn-off, not a turn-on.
Pfuzylogic · M
@SandWitch
We turned you on to NATO.
You are welcome! 😌
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@Pfuzylogic
Actually, you didn't. Sweden went after NATO themselves, with no thanks to the USA. It was actually NATO that reminded the USA back in 2018 that it would be in America's best interest if the USA stayed in NATO instead of exiting that organization when boy-wonder Trump was last in power. The USA has remained safe ever since NATO changed Trump's mind about leaving the party.

America, YOU are welcome!

@SandWitch 😅
I love how you spin facts.
It must be wonderful living in your alternate world of perceptions.
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@Pfuzylogic
Why did you vote for Trump?
Pfuzylogic · M
@SandWitch
Perish the thought! 🤣
