Magnificent buildings!
These are all 19C, and the Victorians certainly loved fancy.
Even something as apparently mundane (to use, now) as a water pumping-station would use architecture that looks more ecclesiastical than engineering - though if you think how advanced the railways and mains water supplies were at the time, you realise the motives.
