Not know where in the US "this place is", I'll throw Hawaii out as a possibility. Other than that, Australia and New Zealand -- a little subtropic, but the northern portions can get near tropical during their summers. You have the pluses of English-speaking and fairly tolerant of different lifestyles, neither of which you will find in most tropical locations.
