Is using your turn signal really THAT important?

There are times when I don't use it. If I don't, it's because other cars are a safe distance behind me. I realize that there are side roads that I might not see and I can't see all cars all around me all of the time. Hence I use my blinker often. I sometimes turn it on and off quickly, however.
