It’s 2023 and there’s a debate over whether or not it’s okay to recline seats on airplanes

It difficult enough to get comfortable on those seats since they go back a few inches. At this point taking a flight on a luxury aircraft would be the better option.

If they didn't do that, there would be plenty of space

Nope. Next debate would be whether people need seats at all? People would be accommodated in baggage area. No economy class anymore
