A trench does not leave dateable traces so its age cannot be analysed. There are no known references to him in anything surviving from monastery that was Cerne Abbas' foundation, nor the church since.
Some years ago one archaeologist studying photographs of the figure, thought it might have been altered at some time in the distant past.
It's not really possible to prove, but he thought the Giant originally had more, ummm, normal proportions, and that he was carrying a cloak or similar over his arm.
