Moving out of state?

Has anyone ever moved out of state and if so what is your technique? I'm moving about 300 miles away from where I originally live with my 2 dogs and boyfriend so I'm trying to figure out on how to do it swimmingly. Thanks.

We've moved from AR to LA, and then from LA to FL (plus intercontinental moves, but thats not exactly the same). What I've done is:
(1) Line up a job ahead of time
(2) Identify a cheap motel near the job & book there for a week
(3) Use zillow & other websites to look for rental places that fit my needs, a week before moving, and contact the agents/landlord to go and see them immediately after the move
(4) Pack all our shit into a Uhaul truck and drive - cats go into cages in the car which gets driven behind the truck (or on a car-trailer if you need to).
(5) Store the Uhaul truck at Uhaul while you're at the motel, then once you have a rental, unpack into it.

So I'm actually transferring my job to the city that I'm moving to, but for the housing it's a little frustrating. I just never liked having to fill out all that information for a house. But I am in the process of filling out an application for this house but as soon as it's done, do they look through your application then call you similar to a job interview or something? Because once that happens I'm packing my things and driving to our hopefully new home.

@Sara-Kay: with me, they've always gotten in contact and arranged a time to view it (I wont rent a place without an onsite inspection, too easy to hide defects with an online one).

@firefall: I totally forgot about that mainly because I'm too ready and excited to move.
