Are you a capable map-reader?

Yep, I learned to drive long before GPS; we used to have a big Rand McNally 50 State Road Atlas in my car. Plus gas stations used to give away free maps - you could grab city & state maps while you were paying for gas.

AAA had nice maps too. One of my favorites was the "Four Corners Area" map - or maybe that was a National Geographic map? Now I'm confused!

Anyway, when my wife & I were on road trips together, we'd alternate the driving and navigating roles. But when things were difficult, like entering an unfamiliar city in a french speaking country, she was better with the maps!
