You can measure the height of anything based on triangles. Sadly, what was once on of the the tallest trees in the world in Australia in the 1800s was cut down by a farmer so he could measure it.

@Tennessean Yeah, that's the one. Haven't had to use it since school that I recall. Neither have my kids with PhDs, because I asked them one day. But my other son - the computer games programmer - uses a lot of physics and maths things. So he spoke up and said yes. How did you use it? Him: I used trigonometry to calculate the camera position for a satellite in orbit around a planet, for instance.
