Did you go to the little museum, and see Herculaneum?
It's a great intro to the Vesuvian destruction of the area, and less visited, probably, than Pompeii (which you should still see).

One of my old bosses was in the Navy and used to live there, said it was kinda run down. I’ve never been there though.

I've been there. Didn't like it very much. There are much better places in Italy
