@EugenieLaBorgia Lol. His name does carry some weight doesn't it ? Maybe I should be scolded for name dropping. 🙂

@Wraithorn What was it...'Long walk to freedom'?

@EugenieLaBorgia That's right. His release from jail was an epic event. I was a policeman at the time.

@Reemar By virtue of being a cop, yes, I was working for the Apartheid regime. After 1994 I worked for the new democratic government too.
It was quite a learning curve, that much I can tell you.
I'm also willing to say that if I ever met Mr Mandela in person I probably would have been speechless with respect and humility. He was a mountain among men because of his own humility.

@Reemar Yes, as a cop. No, the police force was absolutely not dissolved. The same cops did their same job post apartheid.
I did not have to go around beating up on Black people. I fought crime and criminals mainly, regardless of their race.
However, prior to 1994 I was occassionally sent on 2 month camps to violent areas in order to control riots.
I was also trained to defend the border in bush warfare. Thank goodness I was never sent to the border. This all started off as 2 yrs military service which was compulsory for all White males who finished school. I chose to be a cop because they got paid more than army guys.
I have another very interesting thing to say. Give me a minute.

@Reemar I became a cop at age 17 when I finished school. During training which was absolutely military in nature, we were bombared with stories, video footage etc. trying to basically indoctrinate us that Black people in general were criminals.
Freedom fighters like Nelson Mandela were presented as dangerous, communist, terrorists. We were to protect the White population from them.
Post 1994 all of us cops and army, navy, airforce guys and women, now worked for those "terrorists" that we were trained to defend the country against.
Surreal ? Yes inded it was. I learned various good lessons through all that.

@Reemar Yes of course some do. Apartheid was basically part of the culture of the apartheid government. Even their religion supported it. A form of Christianity. Even the Bible was used to back up their beliefs. Their nation were the "chosen" ones of god etc.
It really irritates me now when I hear politicians using religion to back themselves up.
