They often return a "Good on you man, I'm tryin to quit."
It's a bit irritating as you don't know who'll get belligerent if they don't believe you.
It's also an effective tactic to distract, and get inside your 3ft defense boundary.
I'd prefer they just kept walking.

You would never know those, that do smoke, yet never ask.
It's the aggression, that is the problem. Not the smoking, that causes the problem of aggression.
ALL pan handlers are aggressive. Irregardless of what they are asking for. Or they wouldn't get anything at all. Just look at any commercial, that is repeated over and over and over again, nauseatingly.
Aggression is prevalent in everything now. Even the ads against smoking are aggressive.
The anti smoking organizations have taken the same tactic as the smoking industry did decades ago. And for the very same reasons.
Aggression is the problem. Not the solution. Aggression is the capitalistic approach.
