I have been on a journey since Wednesday
I'll start from the beginning, but I'll try to keep things short. Not sure when but when time came to get a new printer, I found this HP Photosmart C4680 with a scanner. It worked perfect through Windows XP, 7 and 10.
Unfortunately the software you install for your printer drivers, relied on Flash player. A program for scanning called Solution Center could not be run, and today, you can't even run the CD to install your printer drivers.
Relative of mine needed things scanned in, but I wasn't able to use my scanner. I thought on the HP forums I saw a post someone said about how they got Solution Center running without Flash, but I can't find that post now. After 2 hours on Wednesday, I couldn't get anything to scan or print.
Today is sunday, and I have made huge progress and successfully got the printer to print, and scan, and I got Solution Center working. There is a post about a version of Flash on Internet Archive you can install, that doesn't have the kill switch. And it's an ActiveX executable.
Now I'm not using this Flash to go on the internet with, nooooo. And I don't have it updating either. But I do have it installed, so I can do scanning. I could just run the executable, but there are some options you get *only* with Solution Center.
I had a post on HP forums but after 3 days no one responded so I made a new post today, and had a response. This person was able to get me the drivers for my HP printer, but I made the mistake of initially installing without having the printer turned on. So I had to uninstall everything step by step, reinstall by running as admin and made sure the printer was on.
And now, the printer is printing, and the scanner is scanning.
The problem is that HP had 2 friggin years to simply do Solution Center so that it didn't rely on Flash. And HP made no effort at all to patch their software. I'm not going out to buy a new printer, because the company who supports it doesn't give a shit. Apparently, after 10 years HP stops support, and you can no longer download drivers from the site. Not sure what crazy world HP lives in, but if I was in that business, I would make damn sure there was support for the life of the device.
Sorry for the long winded post here, but had to get it off my chest. In a nutshell HP sucks. And the person who helped me, isn't even an HP employee. That's what makes this whole thing hilarious. You get MORE support from other regular people, than you do from the people who work there!
