A.I. hallucinations
Ann Wisnovsky passed away in 2023. She had been living in Southern California, next to her daughter, Ms. Couvrette, and son.
Her other two sons lived in Oregon and ran the family's vineyard.
Ms. Couvrette hired a lawyer in California, Steve Brigandi, who agreed to help represent her for free, since Ms. Couvrette’s daughter was dating Mr. Brigandi’s son, demanding $12+ million that she felt she should have inherited.
The judge presiding over the case went back and forth with Mr. Brigandi, several times over the past year, and finally the judge ordered Mr. Brigandi, to pay up $140K for incompetence.
Turns out Mr. Brigandi was using AI to produce the court filings, and the AI was hallucinating, citing case law/precedent that did not exist. It was made up by AI, and the judge ordered Mr. Brigandi, to pay up.
The fine is now being disputed, but it might set a precedent for future AI-assisted legal actions.
