I remember when I first learned about parity because of .par and par2 files.

They used them originally on usenet because of the way it's stitched together a lot of the smaller NNTP servers in the world received only some of the data.

I remember that as well. Problem was not all the par files always showed up in addition to all the multi part rar files. 😞

Remember having to bounce from one free Usenet server to the next just to get all the parts. Huge pain because you had to use a separate program to put all the parts together.

@DeWayfarer no fucking shit it was. these days it's newshosting.com or bust and it's like yeah occasionalaly they'll take things down so utilize RSS with search strings for what you want and have it grab it automatically so that you get it faster than the takedown request can be processed.

@BetweenKittensandRiots I was on altopia for a while then a friend allowed me to use his giganews account.

I was always afraid they would catch us sharing that account. Him being in a different country altogether.

Altopia's retention s*cked major time though.
