Meat can be 3D printed ? Who would've known ?

Russian scientists and experts from fast food chain KFC plan to develop 3D-printed artificial chicken nuggets. The project is underway, with the final product expected to be ready for testing this fall.

The effort is part of KFC’s concept of creating a “restaurant of the future,” which leverages state-of-the-art technology like 3D bioprinting to overcome solutions in the food industry, including more eco-friendly alternatives to traditional meat.

“At KFC, we are closely monitoring all of the latest trends and innovations and doing our best to keep up with the times by introducing advanced technologies to our restaurant networks,” said Raisa Polyakova, general manager of KFC Russia & CIS.

“Crafted meat products are the next step in the development of our ‘restaurant of the future’ concept. Our experiment in testing 3D bioprinting technology to create chicken products can also help address several looming global problems. We are glad to contribute to its development and are working to make it available to thousands of people in Russia and, if possible, around the world.”

I confess, that the whole 3D-printing thing in general...is sort of 'bizarre' to me. I read a little about this particular subject, earlier.

Anything that even might result in less sentient beings being bred and raised in horrendous conditions and slaughtered, is of interest to me.

@Piper I must also admit to not really knowing how it works. It's amazing but not really easy to understand how it works.
Apparently in this case they will be using meat which is grown in a laboratory instead of on an animal. They will load the printer with a cartridge filled with that lab meat and it will 3D print that meat into pretty much any shape they want.
Wow, technology is growing in leaps and bounds now.

@Wraithorn It is both fascinating and still baffling to me, how this technology works. I knew of objects being created by it, including the wonderful "artificial" limbs for both human and non-human animals.

I had not heard or known of 3D food being created, before now. Lab-grown meat I certainly knew of, just not using 3D technology in relation to it. Perhaps it is related somehow, and I just missed the connection.
