tell us about you and swimming. How old were you when you learned how to swim? Where do you swim and what it is like swimming there? When you swim do you just tread water, do a front stroke, back stroke or other?
OldBrit · 61-69, M
I was about 10 when I learnt.

I favour breaststroke but can do front crawl too or backstroke. I used to do 5k or 10k competitive swims for many years. But retired in my 50s due to ill health.

@OldBrit wow! that is very cool. I love the breast stroke too--in the ocean it is awesome. Hope you can get to the pool from time to time.

@robertsnj new pool being built actually near me but sadly the over 60s free entry is no more when that opens next year but I'm thinking of becoming of those old guys slowly chugging along 😂😂

I was a baby when my mom took me to lessons. My dad has a place on a lake that he bought when I was six so I grew up swimming there on weekends. In the lake we wade, tread water or use a floaty. Sometimes we boat to a deep spot with no weeds and throw anchor. Sometimes we boat to the sandbar and tie up. Sometimes we boat to the bar and get boat nachos and bloody marys.

I swim at the gym a few times a week to rehab my foot after an accident and 4 surgeries but I just take it easy and do the back floating chicken bird soldier thing.

@Starcrossed I am sorry for your injury. the lake experiences sound awesome. Hope you have fun swimming at the gym. I use to belong to a gym that had a pool but it always had too many people to be fun. But when I go to hotels on business, (which is not often anymore) I loved swimming in the pool at night --when it was quiet peacful and desolate.

I will have to google floating chicken bird soldier thing stroke. .........I am kidding feels like you mean the back stroke
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
@robertsnj I thought you put your arms in the air for the backstroke 😅🤭😆
I was self taught by 10. My Mother still insisted I take a beginners swim class at the high school. There were 3 of us that already could swim. After the class they had free swim time, and we're diving at the deep end, etc. Instructor was like wtf. Needless to say, I passed and got a little card stating I knew how to swim which satisfied my parents.

I don't get much swimming in nowadays. I'd need to join a gym, or I think the local HS has open swim on Saturdays. In the summer could go to one of the local lakes.

I’m the fastest thing in the water without gills. My kid can beat me in a foot race. He will never beat me in a water race .
I do an open ocean swim as part of a triathlon every year and I love it. I also surf half the year .

I never really learned. I tried more than once. but tease I was on the Titanic in a past life. I still like water!

I am not much of a swimmer. Swimming pools used to give me a headache so I avoided them and the local streams were full of leeches so I tried to stay on dry land as much as possible. My wife loved to swim and used to do so competitively. She won several races for her high school team. She tried to get me to go swimming with her and every once in a while I would humour her and splash around in the pool for an hour. One day she challenged me to a race. I won very handily. She has since lost her enthusiasm for swimming.

I guess take a crack at this--was my question. I live in New Jersey and swim in the ocean during the summer months and Sept It is a quiet ocean without out many waves but a sometimes an undertoe that is sneaky

I breast stroke, back stroke and side stroke in it . The salt makes bouncy easier Sometime I just tread water. Sometimes I wear goggles and have a water proof digital camera.

I am fair skinned and because of that I can't stay in the sun very long even with sunscreen.
