I keep seeing those drowned kids we saved and the older girl that we didn't.

Several years ago at the Clearwater dam. The older boy drug the young boy up first. I did mouth to mouth on him and he came to right away. Then I saw the little girl floating by so told him to go get her. The young boy was doing ok so I got her up on shore. Her eyes were open and she was blue. Then Ann came running over and we did cpr on the girl and got her going. The older boy collapsed in the grass in shock. Another girl kept screaming. Another boy was bawling. I'd totally forgot about the older girl I saw jump off the bridge and go over the dam. I'd been fishing down river when I saw the older boy waving and yelling for help. I ran over and that's when I saw the first kid drifting face down in the water. I didn't have any shoes on and there was no cell service down there. No other folks around. No other bodies floating down river and too dangerous to go wading in the tidal pool. I ran up to the car and tore out down the road doing 100 mph. Calling and calling 911 until I finally got a stable signal. Then went back. EMT was there within ten minutes but by then the aunt had been dead for maybe half an hour. She must have hit her head when she went down the dam or got in the current and drowned. Ann said she'd got her breathing but then she vomited and choked on it. Nothing short of puncturing her throat would have worked. Just keep going through it...

The papers said she had saved the kids but it was the older boy.
He was the one swimming out to get them and bringing them in. She never got up when she got to the bottom of the dam.

The tree on the left was where we were working on them. Helicopter, fire trucks, emts, ambulances all were on scene a half hour after I got back.

Don't slide down dams. They're drowning machines.
