Note. The main reason the stormtroopers were considered bad shots as they were told to let Han, Luke Leia etc escape from the Death Star but to put up enough of a fight for it to look real. The reason they were told to let H, L, and L, Chewie and the droids go was so that the empire could track them to the rebel base on yavin 4 using the homing beacon that was secured to their ship. They did not expect any of the rebels to destroy the Death Star because they did not know that the lead design engineer Galin Erso had deliberately put a catastrophic fault in it between that little thermal exhaust port and the main reactor.
