why is there a D in 'fridge' but not in refrigerator?

curiosi · 61-69, F
The name "fridge" comes from the brand Frigidaire, one of the fist manufacturers of the refrigerator.

your idea sounds reasonable!
LadyBronte · 56-60, F
But then shouldn't they have shortened it to frigid? Still doesn't explain the placement of the "d". Does it?
@LadyBronte: Back in those days you weren't allowed (censors) to say the word "Frigid" on TV or they would cut your WeeWee off.
Isn't that interesting. Yes.

When I was a kid, my parents' generation still called it the "ice box".
I remember the ICE MAN carrying that big block of ice up 3 flights of stairs to our "ice box" on the third floor. 8)

Just yesterday I sent my roommate an email saying I put some food she left out in the fridge. She isn't from around here and she's young and I almost changed it to refrigerator.

It's a minor oversight. I'll submit a change request for that... Good point. Thank you.

@nedkelly: Ok the change has been made. The correct spelling for Refrigerator will now be 'Refridgerator'
ALL: please make note and disregard 'Spell-check' and 'Auto-correct' as these applications will still point out the old spelling until the change has been propagated throughout all applications. Thank you for your patience as we work through this error.

Wow, I have somehow never thought about that.
Curiousme · 56-60, M
it is too cold for the "d"!
