I just got a ballot in the mail about voting to amend the HOA covenant to allow solar panels.

I hate living here. And I hate HOA's. I don't care about them maintaining property values because I hate living this close to so many other people that I can't do what I want with my own damn house. /grump

I lived in one of those neighborhoods for almost 14 years, and while I miss living in a place with sidewalks, I certainly don't miss the HOA board members sneaking into our yard to make sure everything was "up to code".

We had cacti and rocks in our front yard with brick slabs and scrawny trees in the back, so not really much to worry about landscape-wise. We'd get letters saying when we had to repaint our house, though, with a limited list of colors to choose from.
