Welp, I'm making a tough decision.

Three weeks ago the family cat Chloé was stolen. She returned today. She ever so casually walked out of the neighbors front door and made her way to my yard. I thought I was dreaming. I shouted her name (she's hard of hearing) and she walked up to me. Long story short she's in her room sleeping now.

But, I feel guilty. The neighbors have two young daughters and they really love Chloé. While what they did was wrong, they did take good care of her. I'm considering letting the neighbors have her. It's hard because I love Chloé, but I know they were disappointed to see she was gone when they returned from school today.

My giving Chloé to them would be seen as rewarding bad behavior, but they are kinda poor, and I saw the joy she brought to their eyes when Chloé ventured into their yard a few months ago. I think they deserve some happiness considering they don't have a lot to begin with.

What do you guys think?

Well, they're kids. I can't just walk over there and say, "Didn't your parents teach you right and wrong?" 😁

There should be a balance. You shouldn't reward them for taking her, but if you're sure they'll take good care of her there shouldn't be anything wrong with letting her go over to visit and play with them once in a while. You don't need to fully give her up though.

I once saw something where this guy had a cat who would disappear all day, or for days at a time, and then return. He had no idea where the cat would go. One day he attached a note to the collar and wrote something like, "trying to find out where my cat goes, call me at this number". Next thing you know he had multiple families calling him about THEIR cat lol. As in, multiple families all thought that his cat was actually their cat, as it would come to their house, eat cat food, sleep on the couch, play with their kids, etc. Moral of the story, they might think they already own Chloe. No reason the cat can't be indoor/outdoor and spend time at both houses haha.

perhaps you could help them adopt another cat. hopefully oen that would get along with yours and you could take her over there from time to time.

That's a good idea. Chloé came from a bad home, that's why I let her be an independent as possible.

wait.... hold it... why did they have her and not contact you?

I don't know, we speculated that the girls must have hidden her. And when the parents found out they were like, "Whatever, it's here now."

I agree, letting them keep her would be rewarding bad behavior. Also, you have to think of Chloe's well-being. If they are poor, will they be able to afford the extra expense of a pet? Will they get her her vaccinations, and be able to take her to the vet if she gets sick?

They've done well thus far, but you're right. I don't know if they can take care of her if she gets sick.

Why dont you get them a baby kitten instead of giving your family cat.. one that could be really their. Your Chloé is your cat shell alwYs find her way back home wich is your home..

True, Chloé is a rescue and this could be a good way to save another cat. (We have no, no kill shelters in my area.)

Exactly.. but u need to also let them know that what they did was wrong.. but for the kids sake you give them another one.. in rhat case the kids could come choose with u.. too teach hem stealing is wrong but helping is good

Personally, I think it's wrong to steal someone's pet no matter who someone is.
But if that will make you happy, at least you'll still be able to see her 'cause she's next door.

Maybe just let Chloe be an indoor/outdoor cat so she can wander freely?
3venus · F
That's what she is. She's always indoors before the sun goes down.
SW-User
Ah, ok. Then it doesn't seem like a bad idea to let her visit and go back and forth occasionally 😺 she might like that
3venus · F
She might, I think that's what I'll do.

I don't know what your decision will be but I can see you have a wonderful heart

the cat could have stayed there but she didn't...

Chloé likes to roam. Until then, she always came home.
