Why do people like Coldplay, REM and U2?

I never understood their popularity. .

I was about to explain and then realized I can't justify those bands. Well, REM has a couple of good songs. Coldplay is like U2 without the teeth. And U2 had teeth for like, one month in 1983.

Because everyone likes different things? Lots of people don't like those bands but lots of people do as can be said for most bands and genres
