Any rock climbers?

I'm watching a national geographic rerun of some guy climbing a rock face in Yosemite. He's free climbing and yet there are support ropes hanging down from above him. How the hell did those ropes get there?

@NativePortlander1970 But this guy is supposedly the first to attempt this free climbing. It doesn't make sense to me.

@Gibbon Free climbing doesn't use safety or support ropes, they just climb.

@NativePortlander1970 exactly and that's what he is doing. He's not using the ropes. But there is a camera crew which might explain it. It just looks bad considering the point of the show.
