Making a living from sports?

Is there anyone on here who makes a living from playing sports? Just wondering whether you can do ok for yourself - I’m good at tennis and can potentially go into tournaments and get a sponsor etc, I’m not saying I’d win the tournaments but could be fun to try, my parents keep saying that an academic qualification would serve me better.

Good luck and go for it. Academics will always be there. Worse case scenario, you get a scholarship to play tennis and go to school for free!!

I reckon it’s worth having a go isn’t it! It’ll be good fun trying 😊@Teslin

@Claire2k Exactly. You may regret later in life not trying.
Are you sure you’re from Australia and not Texas?

Yeah a couple of people have suggested at least having a go - no harm in it when you’re young! I live in Western Australia and am originally from England 😊@Teslin
I know players on the challenger circuit don't earn the big bucks and COVID also placed financial pressure on many players not at the very top. I think there's nothing wrong with chasing your dream, but an academic qualification in the background is well worthwhile

I know of one athlete in a different sport who completed his degree while injured for a lengthy period

It is brutal hart to make a living playing tennis. Yes, the best make a lot a money and maybe the top 200 or so can live from it. But the rest loses money.
Look at how many people at amateur levels compared to pro. I've skied and biked with people who are amazing at it and none made it to a professional level.

I played in a qualifying tournament for the US Open where I lost my 2nd round match in straight sets to a guy who made it to the main draw, only to have him lose to Jaime Fillol of Chile (not the same guy as the one currently playing). The guy who beat me only won a couple of games in 3 sets from Fillol.
I was a very good college player and continue to play at age 65, but it would have been difficult for me to make a living as a professional tennis player.
Are you already playing in and winning tournaments on the High School/College level? If so, you might be able to make a living as a professional. If not, it’s highly unlikely.

Thanks for your insights there, really appreciate it :)

I do play in some state based tournaments and I’m a little erratic- depends how accurate my shot placement is - sometimes I’m mm perfect other times I’m just out and don’t have the power to compensate! @DragonFruit
