Should I take time off in my exercise?

I am 71 years old. I was ill and bedridden for almost 2 years with several illnesses. I got almost no exercise during that time. I started getting better slowly about 4 months ago. I am seriously overweight (need to lose over 50 lbs). I have arthritis. I had an accident 3 months ago and injured my right knee (strained muscle) . The nurse at my doctor's office told me I would never walk again without the use of a walker. I refused the walker and went online to the Mayo clinic and exercised my knee slowly for a few weeks, then walked in a cane and began swimming daily. Now I walk without a cane though it hurts after about 5 minutes. I am up to swimming steadily for about 45 min.to an hour a day.
My legs are getting stronger and more muscular but some mornings it takes ibuprofen to get me out of bed in the morning. Would I be better off swimming every other day? Do my leg muscles and shoulder muscles need time to heal between swim sessions? I have lost 18 lbs in 3 months dieting and swimming.

Yes any exercise program suggests a rest between workouts.

Generally, that's only true for strength training. After you attain a certain level of muscular fitness from any aerobic activity, running, cycling, swimming, etc., you can do it every day. Activities with higher impact, like running, have to be built up slowly so the joints adjust to the impact, but once you get to a certain level running every day is fine. Or with 1 day a week of rest.
Considering that she is overweight, her age, arthritis and she is having pain on waking it might be good for her to take breaks in between ? maybe? Thank you for your response. :-)

It might very well help. Best thing for her to do is try it. Take some days off of your regular exercise regimen @greenmountaingal, for a month or so, and see if it helps.

@iRant4U: thanks! I love to swim and like doing it everyday. But my muscles have been hurting a lot and taking a day off every 3-4 days feels good. Want to build strong leg muscles so I can walk more easily.

@iRant4U: I swim because it's low impact and I enjoy it so I don't have to struggle to get myself to do it. But maybe a break is good for letting my muscles rest...? Right now I am resting about one day out of every 3 or 4.
