@Teggy The word soul comes from an old root word meaning to bind. The superstitious would bind the hands and feet of the dead to protect the dead from harming the living. The word evolved to reflect the belief that immortal souls were trapped in bodies of water.
The Bible differs in it's meaning of the soul, which became problematic in translation. The Biblical words translated as soul mean come from a root meaning breather. A soul is any breathing animal or man, and by extension their life and life experiences. The 'soul' is in the blood of these creatures. According to the Bible the soul is mortal. (Ezekiel 18:4; Matthew 10:28)
