Is Hell a real place? [Spirituality & Religion]

I grew up going to a southern Baptist church where we were taught that Hell was very real but I read somewhere Hell was a concept the Romans came up with to scare people. I have also read that in the bible nothing over eternally suffering was mentioned originally. So is Hell real or not?

Could God still exist if Hell is not real? Because I always like to picture the idea of a loving Creator who really cares about us and I don't like to think that death is the absolute end either.
