I disagree.

I'm generally opposed to everything this guy says. And in this case it holds true. He wants to teach comparative religion to then attack religion.

My personal feeling is Richard:

I'm not in favour of religion being taught in school unless it's a religion class. In that case all religions would presumedly be studied and the state could not be accused of endorsing any one religion.
katielass · F
@ShortHair: No but i don't have a problem with them being an elective.
malizz · 70-79, M
@katielass: You underestimate the number of religions in the world. The major six is the limit of most schoolagers attention span.
katielass · F
@malizz: No I don't underestimate anything. When we teach our kids history we don't cover every last thing that happened. We cover the important things that changed the course of history. Well, these days evidently they don't even teach that but the point is, religion classes, and they do still exist, do not teach every religion, they teach about the most common ones.

Religion is being taught is schools all over the world
ShortHair · 36-40
@Balint81: Do you think it should be?
Balint81 · 41-45, M
@ShortHair: it doesn't really affect how people think as adults..parents choice until 16,kids choice after that. I was being taught religion 3 classes a week. Today,I couldn't give a rat's ass about it

Religion should be acknowledged as a topic in school. It should become at least general knowledge as one grows but not force upon like praying for god in assembly or forced to go to church every year because it in their policy of the school system. Wanting to know religion as what to believe in should be a free choice outside the school
ShortHair · 36-40
@Ryozo: I agree. It's a huge part of the human race, so it should be understood.

There is cultural value in understanding the classics.

ANy kind of philosophy will inevitably involve metaphysical considerations.

@malizz: Agreed. But Dawkins motives are not pure.
Yes - so long as they are not indoctrinating. Religion is an integral part of modern society, culture and cultural sensitivity, politics, and history.

The way he want's it taught is not going to make religious people happy. I'm fine with it being kept out of the classroom.
ShortHair · 36-40
@FreeSpirit1: I think he made a good point about reading literature. It helps to have at least a basic understanding of religion.

I have a degree in Biology, and Dawkins is a Biologist (with a Ph.D.) But I've seen plenty of this guy and he makes me sick.

And I do believe in the Big Bang, and biological evolution. I am not a Bible Thumper, but this guy is an
