It's still being done for religious reasons, and groups like the AMA keep waffling on whether or not it prevents things like penile cancer and other diseases (their original justification for supporting the practice).

I get the religious angle. I just think that you could still do your covenant with god if you wait until the kid is old enough to choose it.
To the best of my knowledge, there may be some slight benefit with penile cancer but penile cancer is so rare that it doesn't validate the preemptive mutilation of babies as a matter of course
