Atheism [Spirituality & Religion]

There is a common myth that just because we do not believe in an afterlife, that means we have nothing to live for. Well that's wrong, its the opposite; we have nothing to die for. We have a more focused attention to life because we believe it ends when we die. Life is precious and i value it so much.

So I can't be an atheist, if I believe there is something beyond death?

Look up the definition of atheism

Didn't mention anything about disbelieving in an afterlife.

@Mordimoux: it's a lack of belief. As in non-theism. Whilst it may not specifically mention the afterlife, this is a concept that comes with a belief system

@JKerouac: It's a lack of belief, specifically about god(s). An atheist can believe in an afterlife, in the same way he can believe in string theory, or anything else, besides god(s).

@Mordimoux: Explain this afterlife and how there is no Deity involvement?
Mordi · 31-35, M
Some kind of different type of consciousness shenanigans. The possibilities are limitless. Because science doesn't have the tools to measure it, doesn't mean it has anything to do with deities. All of this is hypothetical, of course. My point simply being that an atheist can believe in an "existence" beyond death.

@Mordimoux: an existence isn't an afterlife though. I guess technically it is, but conceptually it isn't

Well, it is the same thing, if you look at the definition of afterlife. "The afterlife (also referred to as life after death or the hereafter) is the concept of a realm, or the realm itself (whether physical or transcendental), in which an essential part of an individual's identity or consciousness continues to exist after the death of the body." Key part being the "continues to exist", which i'd say is the same thing as an existence. We are moving towards semantics territory. I think an atheist can believe in this. Maybe your definition of an atheist is different. I'm fine with agreeing to disagree.
Benny5678 · 41-45, T
@Mordimoux: i agree, technically it is. But we use the word afterlife to define a heaven or reincarnation, which is why i said conceptually it isn't. But yeah, you've made your point. My definition is the same as yours, no different
