In this day and age, it's so crazy to hate gays... [Spirituality & Religion]

or to fight against them being depicted in "family" film/television.

Explain why you do

I think the only non-religious arguments that I heard that can be semi-convincing is that 1) it's either gratuitous pandering that adds nothing of substance to the plot or the character, or 2) that it relies on stereotypes to distinguish the gay character from the straight ones. Sexuality isn't something worn on your sleeves in reality, and to have a character that does is really just enforcing and idea of what gay people are supposed to be like. I've known a lot of gay and lesbian people in my life, and unless they spoke up about it, you probably wouldn't be able to tell

I can get behind not feeding into stereotypes for the sake of it. But i don't get objecting to having a gay relationship just because that is the character you want in the story

@UnparalleledMonster: I can get behind a gay character, but gayness, for lack of a better term, isn't an isolated trait. It affects your life at various points, whether it's being hit on from people you're not attracted to, to facing bullying or discrimination, to having difficulty finding a compatible partner.

If there is a gay character, I'd like for their experience to be reflected by it, especially given the social climate we're living in. I think it can be a little dismissive to have a gay character that is completely sheltered from any of the difficulties that gay people have to contend with

@HalfCactus:

I hear what you're saying. But i think unless the trials and tribulations directly associated with one sexuality or the other are pertinent to the story, then there's no reason to include them
SW-User
@UnparalleledMonster: I'm not saying to include the trials and tribulations themselves, but to have the reaction to them reflected in the character. For it to influence their observations and give depth to the inclusion of their sexuality into the story. Otherwise, it would just feel like gratuitous pandering

@HalfCactus:

lol well that sounds like some pretty complex writing.
I don't necessarily disagree but i don't know how you would practically portray that in your average film

@UnparalleledMonster: The sexuality of most of the minor characters is never referenced or alluded to, so it doesn't matter whether they're straight or gay since it never affects the plot at any point. To have their sexuality mentioned, whether they're straight or gay, should ideally have a purpose behind it. It should do something that adds substance to the story or to the character interactions. To bring it up for the sake of inclusion cheapens the whole purpose, I think

@HalfCactus:

Oh, ok. Sure.
But i'm more talking about people getting upset when a gay relationship is portrayed, period.
SW-User
@UnparalleledMonster: That's just blatant discrimination. I can't help them with that
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@HalfCactus: lol indeed
